Dartmouth, May 20, 1766. Mr. Hall, I had the pleasure of
presenting to Doct. Hathway, your last Monday's paper, which
contained the certain and glorious news of the repeal of the
stamp-act. After some patriotic observations, and deserved
encomiums on the immortal Pitt, the patron of liberty, and
preserver of America from total destruction, the doctor, in
a few minutes, composed the lines inclosed . . . [signed] W.
Wood.
When faction strove by all her winding ways,
Of twice two million people to make slaves:
When D---kes, and E--ls, and B--ps, had agreed,
To chain their countrymen, or make them bleed:
. . . [34 lines, then]
Thy name shall live, thy praises shall be sung,
And Pitt, the English patriot, dwell on every tongue.
